Transport ideas on the table

7 April 2026

The Cambridge Connections Project Team is seeking transport options from a long list of potential solutions presented to the Strategic Planning and Policy Committee last Wednesday, April 1.

The committee endorsed a long list of community proposed solutions and assessment criteria for the team to work through. We received 1522 short, medium, and long term suggestions through six weeks of community consultation from 578 pieces of feedback. Ideas were received primarily through the Ideas Forum on the Cambridge Connections website, alongside emailed and written submissions.

We heard from iwi partners, schools and young people, senior service groups and clubs, social services, business groups, freight logistics and transport operations, civic and community organisations, health, and energy suppliers, as well as the wider public.

About half the ideas were about the council making the most of existing infrastructure, which is generally the most practical and cost effective way to address issues. About quarter of the ideas were about building new infrastructure.

  • Public transport services related to 26.1 percent of responses:

These focused on making daily travel more workable without relying only on private cars.

  • Ideas on freight were received from 28.2 percent of responders:

These were focused on getting heavy vehicles out of the town centre and on to more suitable routes, with suggestions on about designated freight corridors, restrictions in residential town streets, and new bypass or bridge options for large vehicles.

  • Improving connections across the Waikato River related to 37.2 percent of responders:

They wanted to add new river crossing capacity.

What's next?

The assessment of the long list will be presented to the Strategic Planning and Policy Committee on Monday, May 4.
