Background
Winstone Aggregates plans to expand its quarry pit at Whitehall Quarry on Whitehall Road, Cambridge.
Environmental consultants Boffa Miskell has applied for resource consent to expand the quarry pit on behalf of the quarry operators.
The quarry has operated on this site since the 1940s. It began as a farm quarry and has supplied greywacke aggregate since the 1950s. The quarry provided materials for the Karāpiro hydroelectric dam. It was owned by Firth from 1987 and Winstone Aggregates from 1998. Since then, it has been gradually expanded to supply stone for roads, buildings, and construction projects.
The proposed expansion would extend about 15.5 hectares to the west of the current pit and is expected to supply aggregate for around 35 years. The land is zoned Rural under the Waipā District Plan and includes part of a significant natural area known as WP530.
