What is this project?

A large stormwater basin will be constructed at the end of Allwill Drive, on the western edge of the Hautapu industrial area. Associated stormwater swales (grassed channels that guide and filter water) will also be constructed along Allwill Drive itself.

The basin is designed to capture stormwater runoff from the existing Hautapu industrial area and from the future development areas that will eventually surround it. Once built, stormwater will flow through the swales into the basin. It then soaks into the ground naturally rather than running off and causing flooding elsewhere.

When construction is complete, the basin will be planted out in native trees and shrubs, creating a green space with lasting ecological value for the area.

Why this project matters

Low-lying parts of the Hautapu catchment - particularly at the end of Allwill Drive - currently experience flooding after heavy rainfall. This will become more problematic as development intensifies and more hard surfaces are added to the catchment.

Building the basin now means it will be ready to manage increased water volumes as Hautapu grows. It will also be designed to cope with the heavier rainfall events that climate change is expected to bring.

What are the benefits?

What are we building?

This is a significant earthworks project. The basin will be approximately 380 metres long, 60 metres wide, and 4.5 metres deep. That’s about 2.3 hectares in total area. A large volume of soil will need to be excavated and removed from the site during the earthworks phase.

Construction will also include:
  • Additional swales on Allwill Road grass berm

These will be larger than current swales. The mega cess pits which will be installed underground are three to four times larger than the current ones. Being underground, once installed they will not be visible to the public. During installation, large diggers will be needed.

  • Stormwater pipes and inlets

Installation of connecting stormwater pipes and inlets along Allwill Drive.

  • Grassed swales

Construction of grassed swales along Allwill Drive to channel stormwater into the basin.

  • Landscaping and planting

Landscaping and native tree and shrub planting once earthworks are complete.

What this means for traffic on Allwill Drive

Excavating and removing the soil from the basin site will result in increased heavy vehicle movements along Allwill Drive during the earthworks phase. Soil will be transported to a nearby location (to be confirmed once the contractor is appointed).

Traffic management measures will be in place throughout. We will provide more specific detail, including traffic routes and estimated vehicle numbers, once the contractor is confirmed.

Businesses on Allwill Drive will be notified directly. The current practice of parking on the swales will need to change to parking on Allwill Drive. During construction, there will be limits on parking along Allwill Drive.
