What is this project?

Hautapu Road is the spine of the Hautapu industrial area. Right now, it functions and looks more like a rural road than the main street of a busy industrial hub. There’s no kerb and channel, no footpaths, and limited lighting. The intersection at Allwill Drive and the Fonterra factory site entrance does not match the volumes and types of vehicles using it.

This project will transform the section of Hautapu Road from the intersection with Peake Road through to 21 Hautapu Road.

Why is this needed?

An industrial road needs to work for all of its users - heavy trucks, light vehicles, workers and customers walking and cycling, and the businesses and emergency services that depend on it. At the moment, Hautapu Road doesn’t meet that standard.

Without kerb and channel, stormwater runs uncontrolled across the carriageway. Without footpaths, workers and customers walking or cycling to or from businesses face real safety risks. Without a signalised intersection at Allwill Drive, the growing number of vehicle movements, many of them heavy vehicles, creates conflict that will only get worse as the area develops.

Doing this work now, as part of the coordinated programme, avoids the need to come back and dig up the road again when pipes and cables have already been laid underneath it.

What about Stage 2?

This project covers Stage 1, from Peake Road to 21 Hautapu Road. Stage 2, continuing from 21 Hautapu Road through to the new roundabout, is planned as a future project, completing the full Hautapu Road corridor and connecting with the wider active travel network.
