⛈️ What do to when a storm hits

Before a storm

  • Secure loose items

Bring in or tie down anything that strong winds could lift (e.g. outdoor furniture, trampolines—turn upside down).

  • Clear your yard

    Remove branches, firewood, and debris.

  • Bring pets inside

    Storms can frighten animals.

  • Check on neighbours

    Especially elderly or vulnerable people.

During a storm

  • Stay indoors

Avoid going outside or driving unless absolutely necessary.

  • Close up your home

Shut doors and windows; pull curtains or blinds.

  • Stay informed

Listen to the radio or follow Civil Defence updates.

  • Avoid water and plumbing

Don’t use taps, sinks, or bathtubs during lightning.

  • Protect appliances

Unplug small devices; if power goes out, unplug major appliances.

After a storm

  • Follow updates

Keep listening to official advice and instructions.

  • Check for injuries

    Give first aid if needed.

  • Help others

    Assist neighbours if you can.

  • Report damage

Contact Waipā District Council on 0800 924 723 for serious damage and cleanup advice.

  • Stay cautious

Watch for hazards like flooding, landslides, or debris.
